When I was in primary school, I told my mom I would have my own bookshop one day. I loved books. I read and read and read all the time, to the exclusion of everything (and almost everyone) else around me. I read in the bath, at the table, even when my lights were out at night (torch under the blankets!). I couldn’t get enough. One of the dreams I have for my children (in fact ALL children) is that they will love books and cherish reading them.
About a year ago I was trying to find some books online for my son Max, who was 4 at the time, and I kept hitting dead ends. “Nothing like that available in South Africa, I’m afraid” was the general response. And so here we are. I decided that not only did I want to have access to the best quality books for my children, but that I also wanted to give that access to everyone else. The more beautiful books I find, the more excited I get about sharing them (and believe me, there is a world of wonderful books out there!). We import most of our books, but we also feel very strongly about carrying a range of books in South African languages other than English, and supporting local publishers. We carry a limited but gorgeous range of books for younger children, and we have some great ideas about how to expand that into the future. We keep some of the classics and older books that will be recognised across generations, and we also keep up with the new and popular books that are funny, witty, beautifully illustrated and absolutely special. I hope that you enjoy our selection, and find yourself and your children some delightful books.
